Camp Broadway’s development team includes both professional theater practitioners and experienced educators who have an extensive background in the presentation of youth theater programming offered in-school, after-school, at summer camps and special events featuring amateur performers. They have collaborated with Music Theatre International, the authorized licensing agent for the five beloved musicals featured in the inaugural Camp Broadway Collection to curate the materials featured in this program. The scenes and songs included in each Camp Broadway Edition have been excerpted from the original script and approved by the authors or their estates of each musical.

Camp Broadway MyWay is not an abridgement of a musical, but rather an experiential learning program culminating in a musical showcase. While MTI’s catalogue of Junior, Kids and Teen editions feature several leading characters, the Camp Broadway edition shines the spotlight on the Ensemble who tell an excerpt of the musical’s overall story through five songs and dialogue distributed to all participants. The Camp Broadway MyWay musical showcase also offers a customizable prologue and epilogue to the story as well as an original song that can further localize the experience for the participants—all designed to give kids insight in to the making musical theater and the life lessons that can be learned through by working as a team to put on a great show.

The process of mounting a show is a fun way for children to make friends, try new things and learn invaluable lessons that will last a lifetime. YES. As the name implies, Camp Broadway MyWay® has been designed to give camp directors and teachers the tools they need to save time and resources, as well as the flexibility to adapt the program, process and production to the unique needs of their organization. For example, the 5-day schedule can also be offered 1-day a week over five weeks or a few hours every day for a month. Similarly, the staging charts and choreography videos are provided as a guide that can be followed exactly or altered by a director/choreographer who can better showcase the talents of the participants. Since the showcase is ensemble based, the cast size can also vary significantly depending on your enrollment. The only aspect of the program that cannot be altered is the title-specific songs and scenes featured within the official Camp Broadway MyWay® StageNotes®. This creative content has been reviewed by the authors of each show and pre-approved for use within the context of this enrichment program.

Additionally, the extension activities and scenic elements can be adapted, enhanced or disregarded based on time, space or other organizational considerations.

Yes. Based on Camp Broadway’s award-winning methodology, Camp Broadway MyWay® is designed for traditional camps, summer and after-school enrichment providers, community organizations, dance studios, and others interested in presenting high-quality performing arts programming for children—especially those catering to elementary and middle school age learners.

Like other academic, sports, creative or career-focused disciplines, we recommend that Camp Broadway MyWay be led by adults with some basic onstage or backstage experience, ideally in performance or music. To augment the knowledge of your staff, the package includes a step-by-step blueprint that will set your instructors up for success! Experienced theater teachers will find many opportunities to add their own creative ideas to how the materials are taught or presented. To assist everyone on your team, Camp Broadway MyWay® includes an online orientation to familiarize each staff member with the roles and responsibilities of their position. The session is designed for ease of use and will take approximately 30 minutes for each staff person to complete.

ALL kids are welcome and can be successful. Camp Broadway MyWay is an ensemble-focused program that features easy to understand content and accessible activities that can be enjoyed by all participants regardless of gender, ethnicity, background, experience, skill levels or physical ability.

Classes can be taught in any open space such as a classroom, cafeteria, building lobby or other large space where kids can spread out for staging and dance rehearsals. The program culminates in a musical theater showcase that will require a space large enough to accommodate a “stage” for the performers, a backstage area and a viewing space for the audience. Although the program does not require sound and lighting equipment, the space used for the showcase may require some sound or lighting equipment. If so, review tips on selecting theater equipment in the resource section of the package.

Although Camp Broadway presents its Mainstage in the summer in New York City and other cities, Camp Broadway MyWay can be offered at any time throughout the year. The flexible schedule can be offered as a 5-day summer or holiday camp, a month-long course during the school day or a regularly scheduled after-school program.

All materials featured in Camp Broadway MyWay are delivered digitally through our partner, SmarterU, a professional content and learning management system. Upon confirmation of your paid license through Music Theatre International (MTI), you will be sent a code for you and your staff to access the platform on any device you choose. Within the Camp Broadway MyWay Asset Library, you will find all the administrative, creative, production, education and promotional content you need to deliver the program.

The Camp Broadway MyWay package includes an evaluation rubric that has been designed by Dr. Thalia R. Goldstein, Associate Professor of Applied Developmental Psychology at George Mason University. Her book, Why Theatre Education Matters: Understanding the Cognitive, Social, and Emotional Benefits, provides a framework for evaluating the “8 Habits of Mind” or the social, emotional and life skills learned by the participants as a direct result of their involvement in the program. Additionally, we include an assessment that may assist you in providing feedback about the program to your administrators and/or funders.
